The Write Lesson
Consolidating Teachers' Content Knowledge
The Write Lesson, created by Belinda Blick, is a professional learning and development (PLD) company that focuses on building teachers' content knowledge in writing.
Consolidating an understanding of sentence structures and punctuation is the specific focus of her workshops.
We know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don't know we don't know.
I am an experienced New Zealand teacher and facilitator who has worked in education for twenty years. Many years ago, I took a postgraduate course that focused on language analysis in the classroom; it was only then that I realised the major gaps that I had in my own knowledge of sentence structures, grammar and punctuation. Up until this point, I thought I had the knowledge to teach writing well.
"Remember your capital letters and full stops," was my favourite saying. It didn't occur to me that my students had no understanding of where or why to put punctuation in sentences. I then began teaching sentence structures and punctuation explicitly in the classroom and the difference was amazing! Students could understand what I was talking about when I modelled writing. Editing work became so much easier because of the shared language.
Now I facilitate in-school, and online workshops that focus on improving teachers' understanding of sentence structures and punctuation. Determined to keep my knowledge and understanding of current writing trends up-to-date, I also teach part-time in different schools around Auckland.
